By buying large tracts of forest where the bird lives, to protect it from logging operations, as habitat loss was a major reason for the decline of this species. Also, the closely related barred owl, Strix Varia, has moved into areas where timber has been thinned, and is hybridizing with the spotted owl. This alone can push the spotted owl closer to the edge, as the barred owl is a much more common species, and can thrive in cutover woodlots, where the spotted owl requires larger, more dense forests.
