Other than flying, wings are used to help control body temperature. This is done by flapping them to circulate air when the bird is hot. Or puffing them up to capture pockets of air to warm up the bird in the cold.

Some birds use their wings as body language to communicate with other birds. And certain species of birds also use their wings as a display of aggression or dominance.

Other species, particularly parakeets and parrots, have been observed using their wings to huddle chicks in order to keep them warm and dry. Click here to see a fascinating and cute picture of a motherly pink-necked green pigeon, which are found in Asia, doing that.
