The "erne" itself can be any of the Birds of Prey in the genus Haliaeetus, commonly known as "sea eagles." This includes: white-tailed eagles, bald eagles, and a number of fish eagles.

Sea eagles of the genus Haliaeetus are all members of the family Accipitridae. Members of this family would all be related to the sea eagle, as all are, at the very least birds of prey with strongly hooked beaks and distinct morphology. Well known genera include:

  • gosshawks
  • vultures
  • kites
  • buzzards

Ernes, as well as their Accipitridaen cousins, are located on every content but Antarctica as one species or another. These birds are all mostly carnivorous, with a few select species also eating some fruits as part of an omnivorous diet.
