I heard that Russia is synonymous with the bear. See the cover of one of the magazines (Time magazine?) during the Olympics that Russia boycotted -- Russia is depicted as a bear, and I think the bear had taken a bite out of the olympic symbol. (BTW, I hear England is represented by the lion, and the U.S. by the American eagle or a Uncle Sam.)
