Cranes will eat a wide assortment of animal prey and plants, depending on what is available in their habitat. Their diet is fairly flexible, and includes plants, roots, seeds, stems, berries, nuts, bulbs, fruits, some grains, insects of all kinds, snakes, rodents, lizards, small fish, frogs, shellfish, mollusks, and crustaceans. Some species of Crane may shift their diet during breeding and migration season, depending if certain prey are more abundant, and in part due to the fact Cranes may have a greater need for particular nutrients during certain seasons.
