En estrellas de mar (Clase Asteroidea, Phylum Echinodermata), las paxilas son placas pequeñas muy cercanas entre sí que tienen una columna central en forma de hongo de la cual salen espinitas. Su función es evitar que la arena obstruya la superficie aboral de la estrella que es donde se da el intercambio gaseoso y la formación de corrientes alimentarias.
