Detergents (liquid soap) is rubbed into the feathers and then gently rinsed away. The bird's body may be wrapped in cloth to prevent the oiled bird preening and so swallowing the oil - crude oil is very corrosive. Once clean of oil, the bird has to be kept and fed until the natural oils have been put back into the plumage, and it is strong enough to be returned to the wild. Only slightly oiled birds, caught early, have any real chance of survival.

How are birds cleaned in an oil spill?

The dish detergent, "Dawn" cleans them right up!Answer:Cleaning oiled birds is a feel-good thing that the public demands. In reality oiled birds have usually ingested enough oil to impact their health and are no longer viable. In addition the recovery process of feeding the birds and accustoming them to human contact adversely affects their ability to survive in the wild. Why are oil spills such a bad thing to the environment?

they oil sea birds feathers and sea mammals fur. this causes two main problems: loss of insulation causing the animals to lose heat, the animals attempt to clean themselves and in so doing are poisoned by toxins in the oil. also oiled animals usually can't hunt and thus starve.
