Tui are found throughout New Zealand. It's population had declined wince European settlement as a result of habitat destruction and predation by invasive mammals. It is now considered secure and has made recoveries since femoval of livestock has allowed plant to grow back. Introduced species remains a threat especially stoats, common myna, and rats. They prefer broadleaf forests below 1500 metres but will tolerate small remnant patches, regrowth, exotic places, and well-planted suburbs. They travel in singly, pairs, or in family groups. They, however, will gather in number and food sources with other birds.
