I know two types: primary flight feathers and secondaries. The primaries are the largest ones; they're the long ones along the outer and back edges that usually don't grow in layers of each other. They provide the "stability" to flying and are also the feathers on an owl's wings that have the serrated edge that allows silent flight. The secondaries are the "middle" layer of feathers - I don't really know their purpose, though... Hope that helped somewhat.
