I think it is most likely the Baltimore Oriole Bird, because it has a orange tail and the head is kind of what you meant. I hope this helped. :)

You have given a pretty good description of a Northern Flicker. Did it have striping on the back and spotting on the underside? If so, then I am sure that is what you saw. This, by the way, is a species of woodpecker.
