who is aboard the ghost ship that approaches the mariners ship
In Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," the mariner's penance for killing the albatross is being cursed to wear the dead bird around his neck as a constant reminder of his crime. Additionally, he is burdened with the duty of telling his tale to others as a warning against committing similar acts of senseless violence.
the ancient mariner was an impulsive man. It was an arbitrary act. May be due to boredom or the thought driven action resulted in the shooting of the albatross.
who is aboard the ghost ship that approaches the mariners ship
His penance is to wander the earth and tell his story to whomever he met and to teach them to respect all of God's creations.
On an icebound ship near the South Pole, the mariner and his crew are visited by an albatross, considered a favourable omen. The ship breaks free of the ice and sails north, followed by the giant bird. Then, inexplicably, the mariner shoots and kills it, bringing a curse upon the vessel. After some confusion, his shipmates vilify him and hang the bird carcass around his neck. The passing of a ghost ship (a bad omen) presages the deaths of all aboard ship except the narrator. Lost and alone, he marvels at a life-affirming vision in the moonlight, and his prayer of reverence causes the albatross to fall into the sea. Following his rescue, the mariner understands that his penance for his destructive act will be to wander the world recounting his awful story.
The curse in "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" does not die away because the mariner must continue to retell his story as a form of penance. By sharing his tale, he seeks to impart the moral lesson learned from his experience and warn others of the consequences of disrespecting nature and all its beings. The curse serves as a perpetual reminder of the mariner's past actions and the importance of living in harmony with the natural world.
Rime = poem Ancient = old Mariner = sailor you could class it as that but actually ancient means old but in some way mysterious and mariner is a man who works on a ship but is always in charge of all other sailors or therefore travelling alone.
