There are many different kinds of bird and all have different periods of activity and rest. Some kinds of birds are diurnal and are active during the day and sleep at night. Some kinds of birds are nocturnal, and are active mainly at night and sleep during the day. Some species are crepuscular and are most active during twilight periods (around dawn and dusk).

Most species of birds that are commonly kept as pets are diurnal and will be most active during the day. They usually require more sleep than human beings (12 or more hours), most of which will be at night but some of which will be rest periods/naps during the day. Unlike most land-dwelling mammals, birds can sleep with one half of their brain while the other half remains awake and alert for danger. This may be why they require more total sleeping time.
