The different species of kiwi live in fairly similar areas, mostly grasslands and forest.The great spotted kiwi lives in alpine grassland in part of its range, and lower grasslands in others.The little spotted kiwi lives in flax and shrub grassland (rougher grassland is not as lived in) and in older forests.The Okarito kiwi lives only in the Okarito forest.The brown kiwi live in temperatre or subtropical forests, shrub/bush and grassland, prefering denser areas. The North Island brown kiwi is more resilient than the Southern brown, living in pine forest and on plantations.
Depending on the species, kiwis range up to 50cm in height for the female of the largest kiwi species.
The exact age of the oldest kiwi is not known. However, New Zealand Government's Department of Conservation website states that the Rowi, a kiwi which lives in the South Island, might live as long as 100 years.
