Birds do not technically "give birth." The phrase "give birth" refers exclusively to animals that give birth to live young (like most mammals) rather than lay eggs (like birds, reptiles, and insects).
However, it is possible for egg-laying animals, including birds, to have complications during egg-laying that can kill them. The most common complication is called egg binding. Egg binding refers to an egg that is stuck inside the bird, one that she cannot pass through her cloaca. It is dangerous because it interferes with her ability to pass waste and because the egg could break inside her, causing injury and infection.
If you suspect that your bird could be eggbound, consult an avian veterinarian immediately. Do not try home remedies! Most home remedies are ineffective and dangerous.
It is possible for a female bird to have egg binding problems even if she has no contact with males. Birds can lay unfertilized eggs without a male being present (this trait has been deliberately bred into domestic chickens). Chronic egg laying (and egg binding) is especially common with female cockatiels.
All birds lay eggs. No bird gives live birth.
