Flies will be deterred from entering the balcony area because of both the heat of the torches as well as the smell that they produce.

Another alternative to using traditional fly repellant spray would be to set up a bug zapper in your back yard. A bug zapper is a device that uses a bright lights and attracting smell to attract flies into the zapper. Once they have reached a certain radius of the zapper, the bugs will be killed by the zapper. This method will not only keep the bugs away, but will help to reduce the amount of bugs around your home.
