Changing the gear oil in a 4 stroke outboard, is the same proceedure as with the 2 stroke.
Remove the drain plug, at bottom of gearcase, remove vent plug at top of gearcase and let drain. Fill from bottom, (drain plug hole), until lube runs out of top, (vent plug hole). While blocking off drain plug hole, to keep oil from draining, replace vent plug. Make sure that plug gaskets are in place and in serviceable condition. Quickly, replace the drain plug.

To remove the lower unit on a 4-stroke 90 hp Mercury outboard, start by ensuring the engine is in the neutral position and disconnect the battery. Remove the bolts securing the lower unit, typically located on the rear and sides, and then detach the shift linkage and any associated wiring. Carefully lower the unit, taking care to prevent damage to the drive shaft and water pump. Finally, inspect the gaskets and seals for wear before reassembling.
How do I remove the lower unit from my 1984 50 hp. Mercury outboard motor?
For a 90hp Mercury two-stroke outboard, you should use a high-quality lower unit gear lube specifically designed for outboard motors. Mercury recommends using their own brand of gear lube, such as Mercury High-Performance Gear Lube or Quicksilver Gear Lube, which offer excellent protection against wear and corrosion. Always check the owner's manual for specific recommendations regarding viscosity and any additional requirements.

To change the water pump impeller on a 2001 Mercury 115 HP outboard, first, remove the lower unit by disconnecting the shift linkage and unbolting the lower unit from the powerhead. Once the lower unit is removed, take off the water pump cover by unscrewing the screws and carefully lift the old impeller out. Install the new impeller, ensuring it is oriented correctly, and reassemble the water pump cover and lower unit. Finally, reconnect the shift linkage and secure the lower unit back to the powerhead.
Changing the plugs and the lower gear oil yearly is best. There are two flat head screw heads on the lower unit, an upper one for filling and a lower one for draining. Be sure to use marine grade lower unit oil not just regular gear oil.
