The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa and is 1,367 miles long. It does not pass through any major cities, but plays a very important role in the economy by providing water for irrigation and hydroelectric power. The original name of the river was Gariep, but was renamed by Colonel Robert Gordon in honor of William V of Orange in 1779.
