Actual costs can vary dramatically around the world, and even vary in how the charges are calculated between charging for tying up stern to or alongside. In general dockage costs are charged at a set amount per foot or meter for either the beam of the boat for stern to or the length of the boat for alongside, with the calculation further based on whether the dockage request is for transient, seasonal or permanent year around dockage.

There may also be additional charges for services such as electricity and water.
