Same as most other subs during WWI or WWII. They all looked generally the same, a metal tube with a conning tower on it.

The only way to tell if it was an enemy sub or not was:

1. It's location (example: friendly submarines are not supposed to be in that particular zone, therefore it most likely is an enemy sub).

2. The sub's paint job (paint scheme).

3. Insignia (flag or paint scheme).

4. We could say "if it was shooting at you" then you know it's an enemy sub. But that's not totally correct either; FRIENDILY FIRE! Mis-identification of sub or target.
