Theyre used for boating at night. They tell other boaters exactly where the frontend and backend of ur boat is and how long the boat is. so they dont hit u at night. If i remember right the green light goes on the front end of the boat and the red light goes on the back.

The red lamps are displayed on the left (port) side, and green on the right (starboard). A large modern ship, like maybe a tanker or container ship, will probably have several coloured lamps down each side, so that a smaller ship can't mistake where the ends are.
An old saying as a reminder for the colours is, "there is a little RED PORT, LEFT in the bottle".

At night, the red and green lights on another boat indicate its direction of travel. A red light on the left (port side) and a green light on the right (starboard side) mean that the boat is facing you. You are operating a powerboat at night you see res and white lights on another boat what do these lights tell you?

seeing the Red & Green lights without knowing what they are telling you means you should not be the operator of a boat of any kind until you learn that they are Navigation lights and even if you are not operating a power boat, you still need to understand what they mean. I suggest you do a boat lic. course before you cause an accident.
