Modern racing boats have a sliding seat that the rower sits on and a fixed footplate that they strap their feet into. There are then oars that are attached into oarlocks or gates. The rower will place the oar in the water and push against the footplate. The handles of the oar then move in an arc, with the other end of the oar (blade or spoon) doing the same. The oar acts as a lever to propel the boat through the water.

The oars are also known as: blades, sculls, cleavers, macons
