This is a line from a Hugh Cornwell lyric from the Stranglers song "Dead Ringer" (from the "No More Heroes" LP 1977)

It's a person who puts a conker on a piece of string in readiness to play a game of conkers :)

  • A Conker is the seed of the horse chestnut tree (Aesculus_hippocastanum)
  • Conkers, a traditional childrens' game, using the seed threaded on a string

Refer to Hugh Cornwell's (now deleted) book "Song by Song" (2001) in which he explains every Stranglers song from 1974-1990. The book now fetches fairly substantial prices when one is up for auction on ebay.
