I just asked the same question...and found the answer, along with several other excellent tid-bits, over at iboat.com. The proper ratio is 50:1, however, a richer....40:1 ratio is reccommended for the older engines. Hope this helped.
The fuel to oil ratio for a 1962 model Johnson outboard is 24:1.
Two stroke gas is just regular gas with oil added. The oil is usually green in color and therefore tints the gas green. The ratio of oil to gas is specified by the engine manufacturer.
The fuel/oil ratio is 50:1.
50:1 oil mix is typical for outboard two-cycles. Some do a little more in the winter.
The 2 stroke, 9.9hp Johnson outboard produced after 1966, requires a 50-1 ratio. This is roughly one pint of 2 cycle oil, to six gallons of fuel.
