When a vessel capsizes, the first step is to remain calm and assess the situation. Ensure that you and others are safe by checking for injuries and quickly determining the availability of life jackets or flotation devices. If possible, try to stay with the vessel, as it may provide some buoyancy, and signal for help using any available means, such as a whistle or flashlight. Prioritize getting to a safe location if you can, while being mindful of the conditions and potential hazards in the water.
When on any boat you should always be wearing a life preserver vest. The first thing after a board capsizes is to seek the waters surface. There may be an air pocket that forms inside the overturned hull that will let you get your bearings as to where you are and how to best get to the waters surface. Stay calm and do not panic if at all possible.
