The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race was postponed in 1984 due to a serious accident that occurred during a practice session. A collision between one of the boats and a police launch resulted in the death of a Cambridge crew member, Andrew Wiles. In light of the tragedy, the race organizers decided to delay the event to allow for a proper mourning period and to ensure the safety of all participants. The race was eventually held later that year in a different location.
