They can come off or break. The switch it closes can go bad also. After that, it could be several things deeper in the washer. If you feel capable of doing it, the switch should be easy to change. Unplug the washer. The switch is right under the edge of the top. Should be one screw holding it in on the edge of the top. Take the screw out, cut the two wires going to it and wire them together. Try the washer. If it works, problem solved. Get a new switch, wire it in. If it doesn't work, put the old switch back and call the repairman.
