There are many different ways to write a diary. Some people treat the diary as a person, giving it a name and talking to it as a friend; but most seem to just write "Dear Diary," and treat it as if they were sending a letter to someone. A typical diary entry will have the day and date, and either discuss the events of that day or talk about the feelings that motivated the person to write that particular entry.
Some people use their diary as a sort of catharsis, a place to express deep and secret emotions, a way to use writing to feel better during difficult times. Such people often want their diary to be private (young teens who keep a diary are especially eager for parents not to read it).
A diary can be serious and factual; it can be lighthearted; it can express how a person feels; or it can just list where the person went and what they did. It's really up to you. And while many people today associate diaries with women, a number of famous men in American history have recorded their daily activities or written about their life.
