Birds play an important role to control the events that occur in the life of Hansel and Gretel. When Hansel and Gretel return back to their home, they have grown up in age and they can now help their father. The help they give is symbolized by the jewels.
The first to write down the story of Hansel and Gretel were the Brothers Grimm; but it's very likely that the tale was an oral tradition that had been around for many generations earlier.
The old fable of "Hansel and Gretel" has taken many different forms; however, in most of its forms it is fundamentally a story about not going where one does not belong -- because great trouble will happen. Other themes are also present, such as the importance of thinking ahead (by leaving bread crumbs, for instance) and the importance of sticking together in times of trouble.

Hansel and Gretal is a children's story about a boy and a girl named Hansel and Gretal. Their father is a woodsman and they are fairly poor. One day Hansel and Gretal decided not to do their chores, but play instead. When their mother finds out, she is so mad that she sends them out in the woods. And then something happens...

When he was 8 he played Hansel in the play Hansel and Gretel in a children's theater production. His first major part was when he was 17 he was in awake and sing playing Ralphie. That is when Leonard Nimoy decided to have an acting career. Hope It Helped!! =]
As far as it is possible to tell from the story, the witch is a witch and nobody's stepmother......Since this play is a dark and demented one, the mother does take over the place of the witch.Even though they are two different characters and they do not inter-change.The cruel intentions protrayed by the mother all evolves around child abuse and torment. There are several different versions to the end of Hansel and Gretel. In one version the stepmother is still alive when Hansel and Gretel return and she regrets her actions and the family live "happily ever after" with the jewels that Hansel and Gretel stole from the witches house. In the Grimms version though, both the stepmother and the witch use similar phrases and the witch even says "they will not get away this time" implying I think that in the Grimms version they are the same person. So I think it depends on which version you are reading.
In the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel," the birds act as helpers to the children by dropping breadcrumbs so they can find their way back home. Birds also represent freedom and nature in the story, contrasting with the oppressive and unnatural witch's house in the forest. Additionally, the presence of birds adds to the magical and whimsical atmosphere of the tale.
The Grimm Brothers -Google them! They wrote many famous tales today such as Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty and many more.Hope this helped :)
