The best digital cameras are made by Kodak, Canon, Olympus, Nikon, and some other brands. My friend has a Kodak and hasn't had any problems with it. DO NOT buy Sony. I purchased a Sony Cyber-Shot a few years ago and I haven't been happy with it. It was fine at first, but it was eventually problematic, and I couldn't get it replaced because the warranty expired recently. I regret not having chosen a different brand, like Canon. Pretty much, any of the brands listed above are reliable cameras.

Depending upon whether your college student is majoring in Photography or not will determine the best digital camera for them. The best DSLR camera that I have found is the Pentax KX, it combines ease of use with the ability to upgrade the lenses as needed.
