Before the coming of the camera, artists would do rough pencil sketches of country scenes or features of interest. The sketch may be painted in oils in a studio. Or the artist would set up an easel and paint the scene laid out before the artist - watercolour paints being quick to dry was a popular medium.

The first cameras were rather heavy and bulky. A sturdy tripod was needed. The subject, especially for portraits, had to be perfectly still for several seconds. Nowadays, cameras are really tiny compared with past models.
