What improvements have been made to the original camera?

Well the first camera was very simple and not high quality. Now you can simply go to the store and buy any digital camera that is much more complex than the origanal cameras first made in the 1800's.

Isaac newton wrote a book on optics. That established the principles of cameras. Basically a camera requires 3 things.

First is light. Light must reflect off the object for a person to see it or a camera to see it. Second it requires a lens. Lenses have been improved. It is hard to make a lens that will make the center of a picture in focus as well as the edges. Also blue light has more energy than red light and tends to bend less as it travels through a lens. As a result lenses are frequently made of several elements so they will bend various colors the proper amount so that all colors are in focus when every ray of light finally goes where it belongs.

Third. There is the medium. Early cameras used glass plates. That was replaced by black and white film. That was replaced by color film. Now cameras use pixels. Pixels require far less light to operate.

Today cameras using pixels are approaching the quality of the older cameras using professional film that had to be refrigerated. Since cameras using pixels can take many pictures compared to the one taken with the film, the camera using pixels is likely to get a better picture in the process.

After the pure mechanical differences the user interface has been greatly simplified for all but the expert professional photographer. The expert professional photographer will use the new equipment to get all but one or two pictures.

New cameras have automatic light adjustment and focus. A many pixel camera takes sharp pictures. A good computer allows adjustment of the picture with cropping of unwanted parts.

So cameras have become easier to use.

Film was expensive. Pixels are reusable. It is possible to take many thousands of pictures and throw away most of them, only keeping the best. Few people could afford that with the old cameras.

It was possible to modify film in a dark room but modifying pictures on a computer is much faster.
