Le Prince appears to have been working on the camera in the mid 1880's. 1886 is often given as the time frame for the invention of his camera. Edison's camera was developed several years later. The oldest film clip to survive from an Edison camera was a short clip of Edison's assistant William Dickson greeting the camera with a flourish in 1891. Le Prince's "roundhay garden scene" dates from late 1888 and is generally regarded as the first true motion picture.
