The 'click' of a camera is the sound of the shutter (and, in the case of SLR-type cameras, the mirror as well) moving out of the way so the film (or digital sensor) is exposed to the light coming through the lens. Usually mirror and shutter mechanisms are spring-loaded, sometimes motor-driven, and they're very precise mechanisms capable of moving at thousandths of a second.
