polarizing sunglasses have a specific grating on them that is usually vertical llllllllllll lllllllllllllll

light can have various polarizations ... (this is the direction that the E and M fields go up and down) .... when something get's reflected ... say off of water It only is polarized horizontally ------- (that way if you like) ... since this light is polarized in the opposite direction as to the grating it cannot transmit ..... hence the glare off of objects is eliminated when you use polarizing lenses

the intensity transmitted is

I = I0 * cos^2(\theta) ... where theta is the angle between the lense grating and the light .... in this case it is 90 degrees

so cos(90) = 0 and no light is transmitted

for ordinary sunglasses .... the transmitted reduction is just uniform and effects like glare are not reduced any more or less than the direct sunlight

Why polaroid glasses are better then sun glasses?

Polarized lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces like snow and water, they do so by changing the angle of absorbed light and blocking out the remaining rays that reflect into the eyes. And actually you may try a combination of polarised sunglasses. Sunglasses with polarised lenses are effective in reducing glare from flat surfaces such as the car bonnet and great for blocking out reflections from road surfaces to make drive as smooth and easy as possible.
