If an atom has 3 positive charges (protons) and 4 negative charges (electrons), the 3 positive charges would "cancel out" 3 negative charges, with one negative charge left over. So the atom would have a charge of -1.

Depends on the atom, but it is always the same unless the atom is ionized.

What is the overall charge of an ionic compound?

it is always equal to zero. The overall charge of a formula unit for an ionic compound is zero. The numbers of positive and negative ions are such that the sum of the positive charges and the negative charges is zero.

Does xylene cyanol have a positive or negative charge?

It has an overall negative charge :)

Why electrons are attracted to protons?

Particles of opposite charges attract each other. Protons have a positive charge, electrons have a negative charge.Particles of opposite charges attract each other. What are positive and negative charge?

Positive charges are in protons and negative charges are in electrons. Neutron have neutral charges. In an atom the nucleus has protons and neutrons in it with a positive charge overall. Around the nucleus are electrons in orbitals, probable electron locations, they have a negative charge so the overall charge of an atom is neutral because the number of electrons and the number of protons are equal which is also the atomic number. To find the number of neutrons in an atom subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. These values can be found on the periodic table of elements.

What are the subatomic particles of an atom and what are their charges?

Proton - positive charge (+) Neutron - neutral charge (0) Electron - negative charge (-)

A substance has 34 positive charges and 34 negative charges what is the overall charge?

The overall charge is neutral.

How did Thomson determine that there was also positive charges found in atoms?

He knew there were electrons which have negative charges, but the overall charge of the atom was zero. There had to be positive atoms for this to be true, because negative and positive charges cancel each other out in order for the overall charge to be zero.

What are the positive charges in an atom?

It means it has more protons (positive charge) and neutrons (no charge) than electrons (negative charge). This gives it an overall positive charge.

Does current electricity have positive and negative charges?

No electric charges may be positive or negative - electrons have a negative charge; ions have a positive charge.

What is an atoms overall electrical charge?

Neutral. An atom has as many negative electrons in its shells as there are positive protons in its nucleus. Thus overall the positive and negative charges are balanced out. Should an atom gain or lose an electron it will then become an 'Ion' which will have an overall negative or positive (respectively) charge.

An atom contains fewer electrons than protons has as negative ionic charge?

Electrons have a negative charge, and protons have a positive charge. If i have more protons(plus charges) than electrons(minus charges) overall the atom will have a positive charge(mabye +1 or +2 etc....depending how many more protons there are compared to electrons) If there are more electrons(minus charges) than protons(plus charges) then overall the atom will have a negative charge(mabye -1 or -2 etc....depending how many more electrons there are compared to protons) These charged atoms are known as ions.

Explain why atoms have no electric charge even though they are made up of charged particles.?

The electrons of an atom have negative charges that are balanced by the positive charges of the protons. With the negative and positive charges canceling each other, the atom's overall charge is neutralized.Because they are neutral. Ions do have + or - charges

What are the 2 types of electric charges?

Positive charge and negative charge

What is the overall charge of the atom since the atom contains positive charges and negative charges. how is that possible?

An atom is always neutral of charge, meaning ZERO. This is possible because of the equal numbers of (positive) protons and (negative) electrons, each plus charge is compensated by one (equally negative) minus charge.

The overall charge of the nucleus is?

The overall charge of a nucleus is positive. The nucleus is consisted of protons and neutrons. Protons have a positive charge and neutrons have a neutral charge. Electrons have a negative charge but are located in the shell orbiting the nucleus, so their charge is not included in the nucleus' charge. Since the only particles in the nucleus either have a positive or neutral charge, the nucleus will always be positive.

Is an object without a charge repelled by both positive and negative charges?

Positive and negative charges would have not effect on an object without charge.
