Ionic bonds are the bonds that hold ions (which are atoms that are not electrically neutral) together. This usually comes about when one element or compound gives a different element or compound an/some electrons in order to complete an electron shell. This usually occurs between a metal and a non-metal.

Covalent bonds on the other hand usually come about through the sharing of electrons, which generally creates much stronger bonds. Unlike ionic bonds, covalent bonds are usually found withing substances containing only non-metals.
