A cation is formed. Cations are positive ions, they are positive because when a negatively charged electron is lost there are more positively charged protons than there are negatively charged electrons therefore making the charge of the atom positive. Anions are formed when an atom gains electrons and are negative for the same reason cations are positive. Cations are formed mainly by metals which have fewer electrons therefore making it easier to lose them in order to become stable. Anions are formed mainly by nonmetals because they have more electrons making it easier to gain electrons in order to become stable.

Ion is formed when an atom loses an electron?

This is half true. An ion is formed when an atom loses OR gains an electron. When it loses an electron it's called cation because it has a positive charge, and if it gains an electron it's called anion because it has a negative charge.
