Unless a battery/cell of any type is specifically listed as being rechargeable, do not attempt to recharge. Nonchargeable batteries of all types which are subjected to abnormal charging can out gas hydrogen. If this gas is allowed to build up to about 30% concentration within the cell casing or a battery case, all that is needed for an explosion or fire is a small electrostatic spark. The warnings on these batteries are for real.
Now, if you have a rechargeable battery, make sure you are using the correct charger and you follow directions. Otherwise you may end up with the same result. Warnings about not mixing old new batteries in one device are also a big problem. There are many technical reasons for this. Suffice it to say, read and follow the warnings.
As battery technology continues to improve with higher and higher power densities, the danger of fire and explosion also increases. Maybe you've heard about cell phone explosions or laptop fires.

Rechargeable and alkaline batteries have slightly different voltages. Using both types in the same device causes them to drain unevenly and can also lead to other complications, possibly damaging the device and batteries.
Generally, alkaline batteries are best used for low-drain devices such as clocks and flashlights. They last a very long time with almost no self-discharge. Rechargeable batteries self-discharge considerably and are best used for high-drain devices such as cameras. That way, rechargeable batteries are drained fast enough that they don't lose much power by doing nothing.
