Dalton believed that atoms could not be divided into smaller pieces.

Dalton's model depicted atoms of each element as indestructible, indivisible particles that could not be broken down any further. He believed that different elements had particles of different sizes and masses, and that these differences accounted for the atomic behaviors he saw in his laboratory.

Although we now know that all atoms are instead made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons, Dalton's model was an important stepping-stone to our modern understanding of atomic structure.
