1.Synapsis and crossing over in prophase I: Homologous chromosomes physically connect and exchange genetic information

2.At the metaphase plate, there are paired homologous chromosomes (tetrads), instead of individual replicated chromosomes

3.At anaphase I, it is homologous chromosomes, instead of sister chromatids, that separate

Although both meiosis 1 and 2 undergo the same general stages: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase; ther are two main distinctions between meiosis 1 and 2. In meiosis 1 the number of chromosomes is generally halved from diploid (2n) to haploid (n). After telophase 1 the second cycle begins and follows through just as regular mitosis would except with half the number of chromosomes of the diploid cell. After telophase 2 cytokinesis takes place and 4 individual gametes are the result.

What events occur in telophase?

Telophase occur in both mitosis and meiosis. During telophase nuclear membrane and nuclei reforms and in meiosis it further goes for meiosis 2 which is same as mitosis

What is an example of cytokinesis?

Cytokinesis occurs whenever a cell splits into two cells. Mitosis and Meiosis are the two main events where cytokinesis happens.

What specific meiotic events contribute to meiosis leads to significant genetic variation while mitosis does not?

How are the process of mitosis and meiosis similar to each other?

Both processes begin with similar events, including chromosome replication.

What happens when cells begin to divide?

With dramatic photomicrographs and computer-generated graphics, analyze the fascinating chain of events that result in cell division--and demonstrate precisely how mitosis & meiosis differ. How can a single cell pass on crucial genetic codes? Your students will formulate answers to this question and other biological puzzles as they trace each phase of these processes, comparing plant and animal mitosis and analyzing the complex second stage of meiotic division. The program illustrates the application of mitosis and meiosis in asexual and sexual reproduction, and looks at the consequences of abnormal cell division.

What is the two events unique to meiosis and describe?

Meiosis is a special type of cellular division because it results in cells which have half the number of chromosomes as the original cell. Meiosis produces 4 gametes (sex-cells) from one original cell. These gametes are involved in sexual reproduction.

Mitosis

What are the two major events during the mitotic phase of the cell cycle?

The two major events that occur during the mitotic phase of the cell cycle are the alignment of the chromosomes in the middle of the cell and the separation of replicated chromosomes or sister chromatids.
