London metal exchange for Zinc as of 7/30/2010 was $1971 per metric tonne or $1.97 per kilogram.

As you can see, the raw materials for a lithium-cadmium battery are much more expensive than those for a zinc-carbon battery. The advantages of the lithium-cadmium battery such as high energy-to-weight ratio, no memory effect (hence rechargeable) and the slower rate of loss of charge when not in use may justify the higher cost for many applications.
