Interesting question!

I do not really know, but chemically it is doubtful as it only reacts to the reagents it is designed to react with and seen inert other wise. Besides, I have seen litmus paper in the lab that look older than dirt and still worked properly.

Still, as I said, I do not know for sure, so keep digging.

What can cause an inaccurate reading with litmus paper?

Inaccurate readings with litmus paper can occur due to contamination, such as residues from previous substances or chemicals on the paper. Exposure to moisture or humidity can also affect the paper's pH indicators, leading to misleading results. Additionally, using litmus paper beyond its expiration date may compromise its reliability. Finally, if the sample being tested is too concentrated or not well-mixed, it can yield an incorrect pH assessment.

What is the word and symbol chemical equation for litmus paper reacting with a acid or base?

Litmus paper is an indicator that turns red in acidic solutions and blue in basic solutions. The chemical equation for litmus paper reacting with an acid could be: H+ (from the acid) + Litmus paper (Red) -> Litmus paper (Blue). Similarly, the equation for litmus paper reacting with a base could be: OH- (from the base) + Litmus paper (Red) -> Litmus paper (Blue).
