Dr. Smith's chemistry midterm has 60 questions. She scores the test as follows: for each correct answer, she gives 2 points; for each incorrect answer, she subtracts 2/3 of a point; for unanswered questions, she neither gives nor subtracts points. If Andrew scored a 68 and did not answer 2 of the questions, how many questions did he answer correctly?

Let C = Correct

Let I = Incorrect

Let N = None

68=(C*2)+[I*(-2/3)]+(N*0)

Suggested answer:

C=40

I=18

N=2

Check:

C+I+N=60

68=40*2 + 18*(-2/3) + 2*0 => 68=80-12+0 => 68=68

How many nutrons does argon have?

There are 3 Isotopes with the following mass numbers: Argon 36 Argon 38 Argon 40 Argon has an atomic number of 18 (it therefore has 18 protons in its nucleus and 18 electrons flying round it). To get the number of neutrons one subtracts the atomic number from the mass number. This means that some Argon atoms have 18 neutrons, some 20 neutrons and some 22 neutrons the isotope with 22 neutrons is the most common and forms 99.6% of all Argon.

What is a reagent blank?

A Reagent Blank contains the reagent(s) in the same concentration(s) and solvent(s) as would be contained in a sample prepared for analysis such that the Reagent Blank and a prepared sample only differ in that the Reagent Blank contains no sample and that none of the analyte(s) of interest has(have) been intentionally added to the blank. For samples containing radioactive isotopes that are prepared then analyzed by alpha particle, beta particle, or gamma ray counting techniques; analytical methods for the direct determination (no reagents are used) of the concentration of elements, ions, or compounds that absorb visible, ultraviolet, or infrared light, such as certain analyses by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and analysis by inductively-coupled plasma - atomic emission spectrophotometry (ICP-AES), ICP - mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) or atomic absorption (AA) spectrometry, preparatory blanks, often called "Prep Blanks," are used. These types of blanks are prepared exactly as if they were samples, for example by preparatory chromatography, solvent extraction, purge-and-trap methods, or acid or fusion digestion, but without any sample added. This type of blank is not technically a Reagent Blank, although it may sometimes be named as such. Reagent blanks and Prep blanks are used so that the contribution of any species not present, or not expected to be present, in the sample alone that adds to or subtracts from the detection signal may be evaluated or subtracted out (or added to) the detected concentration of the analyte.

Where do gases exchange?

The pathway of the circulatory system varies based on different species. The mammalian cardiovascular system begins with the pulmonary circuit. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs via the pulmonary arteries. As the blood flows through capillary beds in the lungs, it adds oxygen and subtracts carbon dioxide. Oxygen-rich blood comes from the lungs via the pulmonary veins to the left atrium of the heart. Next the oxygen-rich blood flows into the left ventricle as the ventricle opens and the atrium closes. The left ventricle pumps the oxygen-rich blood out of the body tissues through the systemic circuit. Blood leaves the left ventricle through the aorta, which passes blood to arteries leading throughout the body. The first branches from the aorta are the coronary arteries which provide blood that the heart muscle needs. Then come branches leading to capillary beds in the forelimbs. The aorta continues, supplying oxygen-rich blood to arteries leading to arterioles and capillary beds in the abdominal organs and legs. Inside the capillaries, oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse along their concentration gradients with oxygen being moved from the blood to the tissues. Carbon dioxide produced by cellular respiration diffuses into the bloodstream. Capillaries join again, forming venules, which give blood to veins. Oxygen-poor blood from the head, neck, and forelimbs is guided into a large vein called the anterior vena cava. Another large vein called the posterior vena cava drains blood from the chest and back legs. The two venae cavae empty their blood into the right atrium and the oxygen-poor blood flows into the right ventricle.

What is the Roman numeral CCCXXXXV?

C is 100, X is 10 and V is 5. This would be 345. But that is incorrect. 345 is written as CCCXLV. The X (10) is before the L (50) so it subtracts.
