In places where plants grow in profusion and their remains become part of the sediment, heat and pressure from the burial process will transform them into fossil fuels. In the case of planktonic plants and animals these are transformed into oil and gas and in the case of terrestrial plants these form thicker lenticular bodies of carbon rich rocks called coal (and peat).
