1-butyne and 2-butyne are similar to each other in that they are both alkynes, and butyne to be specific. The difference is the placement of the triple bond between carbons. In 1-butyne it is placed on a primary carbon, where in 2-butyne it is placed on the first available secondary carbon.

The 1 & 2 tell you @ which carbon atom the triple bond starts:

1-butyne: HC≡C-CH2-CH3

2-butyne: CH3-C≡C-CH3

Going from left to right, 1-butyne has the triple bond between the first (1) & second carbon atoms. 2-butyne has the triple bond between the second (2) & third carbon atoms.

they have the same chemical formula (C4H6) but have a different structure:

1-butyne

H-C-(triple bond)- C - CH2 - CH3

2-butyne

CH3 - C -(triple bond)- C - CH3
