Carbon =14 is an isotope of carbon.

Isotopes of any element contains the same number of protons, but A DIFFERENT NUMBER OF NEUTRONS. This gives isotopes of the same element different atomic masses.

The number comes from the addition of all the protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Collectively the nucleons.

Carbon-14 contains 6 protons, 8 neutrons and 6 electrons.

The '14' comes the additions of 6 + 8 = 14 .

The most common isotope of carbon is Carbon-12

Carbon-12 contains 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons

The '12' comes from 6 + 6 = 12.

There is a third isotope of carbon , which is Carbon-13

Carbon-13 contains 6 protons , 7 neutrons and 6 electrons.

The '13' comes from 6 + 7 = 13.

Notice in all cases the number of protons does NOT change, otherwise it is a diffeerent element.

Symbollically these isotopes can be written as

Carbon -14 ; 14-C ; [14/6]C

Carbon - 13 ; 13-C ; [13/6]C

Carbon - 12 ; 12-C ; [12/6]C

NB Do NOT confuse ISOTOPES , with ALLOTROPES. Allotropes are where the element displays different physical characteristics. In the case of carbon l Graphite, Diamond and Buckminster Fullerene(Footballene).

Monoxide means that it only has one oxygen atom. Carbon has two oxides; monoxide means one oxygen atom per carbon atom, in contrast to carbon dioxide which has two oxygens per carbon. also means u gotta jizz in ur mouth

It is derived from chemistry nomenclature. Since the formula is CO2 it has 1 Carbon atom and 2 Oxygen atoms. Therefore, nomenclature designated for chemical compounds formed from covalent bonding state that it would be called: Carbon Di (for 2) Oxide. It is just convention, Nothing special nor named after anyone.

Carbon 14 got its name because it contains 6 protons and 8 neutrons. (6 protons+ 8 neutrons= 14).

The standard practice is to refer to an element's isotopes by adding the number (mass number) to the end of the name; e.g. uranium 238, titanium 48, etc.

It's made of carbon and oxygen. Two oxygen atoms per carbon atom, to be precise, hence "dioxide."

Carbon is at the top. Where boron is at the top, it is the boron group.
