In a mixture the two materials are combined but they do not bond, or react with each other, indeed they can only be formed by mechanically mixing the two substances. Mixtures can often be separated back into the original materials. The properties of a mixture are close to those of the two materials that make up a mixture.

A compound is formed when two substances are chemically bonded to each other. These have different physical and chemical properties from the substances they were made from. These are also harder to return to the original substances.
