First, write Ca on the paper. Next, look at the Periodic Table to find the number of valence electrons. You will see the electron configuration is 2-8-8-2. Therefore, it has 2 valence electrons. Draw two dots around the Ca to form the diagram.

You find out the valence electrons of the element. (The number of electrons on the outermost layer) You write the symbol of the Element ( I ) and then put dots around the symbol. Start from the top, and then put a dot on the side, then put a dot underneath it, and then on the other side, counterclockwise. If there are more than 4 valence electrons, then draw a dot next to the other dots in the fashion of this image: Open this in your browser. http://www.fordhamprep.org/gcurran/sho/sho/images/lewdot14.jpg I think there are no more than 8 valence electrons in an element. Hope that Helps! -Sean

You do "Mg" then put 2 dots anywhere you want (around the "Mg")... it shows it has 2 valance electrons, if you are assuming that its not in an ionic form.

What information can you get from electron dot diagram?

1. An electron dot diagram can show you that the symbols for an element surrounded by dots. Each dot stands for one valence electron.

What are diagrams?

There are two types of diagrams one is the Lewis diagram the other is the Electron dot diagram. To make the electron dot diagram you put the electron symbol and put a dot on one of the sides for each period (you don't count the middle section.) . . :Ne: = Neon dot diagram ' '
