Recovering precious metals, esp. gold, involves highly toxic and dangerous chemicals like potassium cyanide and Aqua Regia (a mixture of concentrated Nitric and Hydrochloric acid).

A more low tech approach would be to use a smelting furnace to melt the gold off. However, in some countries, it is illegal for anyone who is not suitably licensed and qualified to attempt this.

In South Africa it is illegal for anyone other than a licensed jeweller to have raw and unprocessed gold in their possession.
