I'll give a non chemist answer but a wise answer...
logically, you are covering it with a mixture (correct this If Im wrong), preventing it to have contact with the oxygen in the atmosphere. Therefore preventing the iron to oxidize :)

∙ 11y agoSince rust forms only when the iron comes into contact with oxygen, when you paint the iron gate, the paint serves as a shield to protect the iron gate from coming into contact with the oxygen in the air, and therefore painting on an iron gate prevents it from rusting.
